SCOTCH -
Scotch’s true name is Scotch Whiskey, it is a malt or grain whiskey made in Scotland. Scotch is divided into 5 groups; single malt, single grain, blended malt, blended grain and blended. The term “single” refers to the number of distilleries used rather than the number of malts or grains used in the scotch (as commonly thought). The term “blended” when followed by “malt” or “grain” refers to the use of scotches from multiple distilleries blended together. While the term “Blended scotch” refers to blended single malt and single grain scotches together. Scotch has a ABV of 40% to 94.8%
The origin of scotch is clearly documented, in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, 1 June 1495. To Friar John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae, VIII bolls of malt. A friar named John Cor was the distiller at Lindores Abbey in the Kingdom of Fife.
Scotland has very strict laws about the manufacturing, labeling and distribution of scotch. A search for Scotch Whisky Regulations 2015 will give you more info than you probably want. Next I have my scotch from my Mini Liquor Bottle collection, I hope you have a chance to try some of the great variety of scotch and I’m sure you will find a favorite. Cheers.
