RUM -
Rum is a distilled alcoholic drink made from sugarcane byproducts like sugarcane juice or molasses by using fermentation and distillation. The rum is then aged in oak barrels, after which the barrels are blended together to get a more consistent flavor.
The humble beginnings of rum are thought to be in ancient India or China. In the 14th century Marco Polo was recorded to have a “great wine made of sugar” while he was in the area of what would be modern Iran. The first distilled rum was in the Caribbean on a sugarcane plantation in the 17th century, Slaves discovered if you ferment molasses it becomes alcohol. Later they would discover distilling would concentrate and help remove impurities. Rum has been recorded from Marco Polo in the 14th century, Brazil in 1620, Swedish warships in 1628, Barbados in 1651, the Royal Navy in 1655 and Colonial America in 1664.
Rum is produced all over the world, but the majority comes from the Caribbean and Latin America. Rum is available in different forms, light rum, golden rum, dark rum, flavored rum, overproof rum, spiced rum and premium rum. The standard rum ABV is 40% [80 proof], with many overproofs as high as 75% [150 proof] to 80% [160 proof] like Bacardi 151.
